Anyone has any info on getting grants for historical buildings. I heard it was pricey the first time?

Hi there,
I looked into this myself since my husband and I acquired a dilapidated storefront building ( apt upstairs). I wish I bookmarked the site but here is what I remember finding. The building first has to be listed with the National Registrar of Historic Places ( if that;s not the name of it, it's something similar). This in itself may pose problems down the road if you have other development plans for the property in the future. ( As far as tearing down the building) This is what stopped us from going farther with this since we own several adjoining lots and may have other plans down the road. Also, I believe (and don't trust my memory, check it out) that if it is investment property, you are not eligible for a grant, only a tax credit at either the 10% or 20% level. ( I don't remember the requirements for each level.) You may be eligible for a grant if the house is your primary residence. Like I said, don't trust my memory, I don't remember the particulars, and there are a lot of particulars!
Happy Hunting

Hi JoplinInvestor & Michele! One of my 3 adjoining properties is registered with the Historical Society. I knew the owner before I bought it. I wish he was still around to ask more questions, but he moved out of state. Anyway, from what I remember, he said that they spent about $14,000 in renovations on this property. He said that he had to pay for 10% of this. The only condition was that he had to live in the property for 5 years, before he could sell it. I remember that, because I bought it 5 years after the rehab was done.

If you contact your local Historical Society, I'm sure they can give you the particulars. Also in this area, they offer grants for some investment properties. I've inquired about that, but as of yet haven't acted on it. I hope this helps.
